That homo mother F’r is crazy!
Homosexuality was listed as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) until 1973, when the American Psychiatric Association (APA) removed it:
DSM-I (1952): Homosexuality was listed as a sociopathic personality disturbance.
DSM-II (1968): Homosexuality was still listed as a mental disorder.
DSM-II (1974): Homosexuality was replaced with the category of "sexual orientation disturbance".
DSM-III (1980): The category of "sexual orientation disturbance" was replaced with the diagnosis of ego-dystonic homosexuality.
DSM-III (1987): Ego-dystonic homosexuality was removed from the DSM.
The APA's decision to remove homosexuality from the DSM was based on a comparison of theories that pathologized homosexuality with those that viewed it as normal. Gay rights activists challenged the classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder during the gay liberation movement following the 1969 Stonewall riots.
Research by Alfred Kinsey and others found that homosexuality was more common in the general population than was previously believed. Evelyn Hooker's study found no more signs of psychological disturbances in a group of gay men than in a group of heterosexual men.
